Ever pull a batch of bottles off the line only to find the walls are uneven or the shapes are just… off? It’s frustrating. Usually, it comes down to the heating. Either your old lamps are starting to fade, or the heat just isn’t hitting the preform where it needs to. The good news? Swapping those out for high-spec quartz lamps usually clears the problem right up.
Let’s Talk Heat
It all comes down to where the filament sits and how clean the quartz is. We use high-grade fused quartz because it lets short-wave infrared radiation punch straight into the PET without wasting energy on the air around it. But you can’t just throw any lamp in there. If the wattage is too high for the length of the tube, you get hot spots. We spend a lot of time balancing the voltage and wattage so the heat spreads smoothly from one end to the other. No spikes, no dips. Just a steady glow.
The Hardware Side of Things
Nobody wants to spend a weekend rewiring an oven. That’s why we use standard R7s or SK15 connectors. You just pop the old one out and drop the new one in. Simple. We also use special coatings on some of our tubes. These shift the infrared spectrum to target PET more directly, which actually takes some of the pressure off your heating circuit. It’s a smarter way to get the job done.
Real Talk: On the Shop Floor
These lamps pack a punch, and that heat density is great for speeding up your cycle times. But here’s the catch: you’ve got to keep an eye on your ventilation. If your cooling fans are clogged with dust or just can’t keep up, the oven gets too hot. That’s when you risk preform crystallization, and that’s a headache you don’t want. One last tip? Check your reflector plates every single time you swap a lamp. A dirty reflector is a silent killer—it wastes energy and sends heat toward the machine frame instead of the bottle. Keep them polished. It makes a world of difference.
