The Nitty-Gritty on Heat
These lamps have to hit hard and fast. We’re talking high voltage and high wattage to get that rapid thermal response needed for high-speed blowing. We build our tubes to fit the exact length and voltage of Sidel and Krones footprints. By using a high-wattage shortwave lamp, you get concentrated IR energy that pushes the preform to its glass transition temperature in seconds. **One quick warning:**double-check your power supply and wiring. If they can’t handle the current draw, you’re just asking for the electrodes to burn out early.
Quartz and Connections
The oven is a brutal environment. To handle that constant heating and cooling, we use high-purity quartz glass. Most of these units use R7s or SK15 connectors. We make sure the fit is tight. Why? Because a loose connection causes arcing, which creates a hot spot that can literally melt your socket. Plus, some of our versions have a special coating. It bounces the heat back toward the preform so you aren’t wasting energy.
A Few Tips for Installation
Swapping these out is pretty simple, but there’s one golden rule:do not touch the quartz with your bare hands. The oils from your skin create tiny hotspots. When the lamp heats up for the first time, those spots can make the glass crack. Just grab some lint-free gloves and you’re good. Also, be careful if you’re tempted to push for higher heat density to speed up your cycles. Higher wattage puts more stress on your cooling blowers. If you go higher than the original OEM specs, keep a close eye on the oven’s ambient temperature. You don’t want to warp your reflectors.
