
The Real Deal on Lead-Wire Sealing in Infrared Heaters
If you’ve ever installed ceiling-mounted infrared heaters, you know the struggle. You’ve got these high-wattage elements pumping out heat, but there’s a catch: that heat doesn’t just move downward. It creeps. It crawls right back up into the electrical connections. If your lead-wire sealing isn’t up to the task, the insulation just gives up. It gets brittle, cracks, and—boom—you’ve got a short circuit on your hands. The slow burn Most of the generic heaters out there use basic silicone sleeves or standard heat-shrink. In a pinch, they work. But over time? They fail. We’ve seen insulation literally turn into carbon. Once that happens, it actually starts conducting electricity between the hot lead and the chassis. That’s why we don’t mess around with basic specs. We use high-grade fluoropolymers or ceramic-bead seals. They can handle 300°C and beyond without breaking a sweat. Why a tight seal actually matters Think of the seal as a fortress. It needs to be airtight and chemically bonded to the housing. Why? Because if there’s even a tiny gap, oxygen and moisture sneak in. They start eating away at the copper leads. Once that oxidation kicks in, resistance goes up, the joint gets even hotter, and eventually, the wire just burns out. We use vacuum-sealing and compression molding to lock the atmosphere out entirely. It keeps things clean and cool. The one trade-off Here is the thing: when you seal something this tightly, the wiring gets stiff. You can’t just bend these leads into a sharp angle like you would with some cheap plastic-coated wire. If you try to force a tight bend during install, you’ll probably crack the seal. Just give the wires a nice, gentle loop. It takes a few more seconds, but it saves you from a massive headache later. Let’s talk safety At the end of the day, this isn’t just about making the heater last longer. It’s about not burning the building down. Industrial ceilings are magnets for dust. When you mix conductive dust with a cracked wire, you’re basically asking for an arc-over. Proper sealing keeps the electricity exactly where it belongs, no matter how much grime or heat is swirling around up there.
