
Stopping the Heat Rollercoaster on Your Sidel SBO6
If you’re running a Sidel SBO6, you know the headache of inconsistent heating. One minute everything is fine, and the next, you’ve got uneven walls or bottles that just look… off. Usually, it comes down to a simple mistake: mixing and matching IR lamps. Maybe you grabbed a different brand to save a few bucks, or the specs were “close enough.” But here’s the thing. If one lamp is putting out even 5% less power than the others, you’ve got a cold spot. That’s exactly how you end up with pearling or, even worse, burst bottoms. The trick is the power match. Your SBO6 needs a steady thermal profile to behave. We build our lamps to mirror the exact electrical footprint of the original parts. I’m not talking about just copying the label. We’re talking about the actual thickness of the quartz and the gauge of the resistive wire. When the voltage hits that filament, the heat needs to be identical across the whole tube. If it isn’t, your PID controllers start fighting the fluctuation. It’s a constant tug-of-war that makes your heat zones unstable. Don’t overlook the connectors. We use high-purity quartz to make sure the shortwave IR actually gets through. But the real “silent killer” is the connector—usually R7s or SK15. These aren’t just plugs. They have to handle a massive amount of current without oxidizing. If you use a cheap connector or one that doesn’t fit snugly, it’ll arc. That burns out the socket and kills your lamp way before its time. It’s a frustrating way to lose money. A quick word of caution. High-wattage lamps are great for fast cycle times. They give you that punch of heat you need to keep the line moving. But there’s a trade-off. More heat in the oven puts more pressure on your cooling blowers. If your fans are wearing out or your vents are clogged with dust, those high-output lamps will hike up the ambient temperature. If the air isn’t moving, your preforms can actually warp. Keep your airflow clean. It’s the only way to actually get the performance you’re paying for.
