When you’re setting up infrared heaters for a changing room or a fancy lounge, you want that “instant warmth” feeling. You know the one—where you step into the room and it feels like a warm hug immediately. Unlike those old forced-air systems that just blow lukewarm air around, infrared goes straight for the target. It hits the person, not the room. But if you want that five-star experience without roasting your ceiling or tripping a breaker, you have to get the mounting distance right. The problem with “too close” Here’s the thing: radiant heat travels in straight lines. If you slap a high-wattage heater too close to the ceiling, you’re basically creating a heat trap. The ceiling soaks up all that energy, gets scorching hot, and then starts pushing that heat right back into the unit. I’ve seen this happen way too often. The unit overheats, the thermal cutout kicks in, and the heat just… stops. Right when your guest is shivering. Give yourself some breathing room. Aim for a gap of 0.5 to 1 meter from the ceiling. It lets the air move around the housing so you don’t end up with warped ceiling tiles or peeling paint. Finding the “Sweet Spot” Usually, for cold changing areas, we use shortwave or medium-wave infrared because they pack a punch. But remember, the closer you are to the element, the more intense the heat gets. If it’s too low? You’ll burn your guests. Too high? The heat disappears before it even reaches them. For most commercial spaces, 2.5 to 3 meters is usually the magic number for height. What if you’re tight on space? Sometimes the architecture just doesn’t cooperate. If you’re stuck in a tight spot and can’t get that recommended clearance, you’ve got a couple of options. You can dial back the power, or use a reflector with a tighter beam angle. This pushes the heat straight down and keeps the ceiling from taking the brunt of the load. Just a heads up: tighter beams create “hot spots.” You’ll probably need a few more units to make sure the whole room feels evenly warm, rather than having one spot that feels like a sauna and another that’s freezing.
