
Making Bathroom Heaters Warm—Without the Blinding Glare
Ever stepped into a bathroom and felt like you were staring directly into the sun? That’s the problem with most high-wattage quartz lamps. They give you that instant, cozy heat we all love, but they also blast a harsh, white light that can be genuinely painful. It’s especially tough on babies, whose eyes are way more sensitive than ours. Dealing with the glare We figured out a way to fix this without losing the heat. Instead of using a basic clear glass tube, we use special coatings or tweaked filaments. Here’s the trick: we shift the light. We push the energy further into the infrared range and dial back the blue light. That’s the aggressive stuff that makes you squint. You still get all the warmth, but your eyes don’t feel like they’re under attack. The nuts and bolts To keep the heat consistent, we use halogen-filled quartz tubes. The halogen keeps the filament from wearing out too fast, so the lamp actually lasts. We also use R7s snap-in connectors. They’re simple. If a bulb goes, you just pop it out and click a new one in. No fuss. But there’s a catch. Physics doesn’t take a day off. Even if the light is “soft” on your eyes, the lamp is still putting out a ton of heat. That’s why the housing matters. If you use cheap plastic reflectors, they’ll warp or melt under the pressure. We stick with aluminum because it can handle the heat without breaking a sweat. Keeping it safe for the little ones When we’re designing for infants, “soft light” is the goal. Now, we can’t just dim the lamp—if we did, the baby would be cold. Instead, we use matte finishes on the reflectors. It scatters the light, getting rid of those blinding “hot spots” while still pushing the warmth exactly where it needs to go. Just a heads-up: make sure your installation has plenty of breathing room. These things run hot, and they need a bit of airflow to keep everything running smoothly.
